What is Transactional Email?
A transactional email is an automated, one-to-one message triggered by a specific user action or system event — not a campaign sent to a list. It carries information the recipient is actively expecting, which is why these emails get the highest engagement and the strictest deliverability requirements of any mail you send.
Common transactional emails
- Account verification and email confirmation
- Password resets and magic-link sign-ins
- One-time passcodes for login or 2FA
- Receipts, invoices, and order confirmations
- Shipping and status notifications
Transactional vs. marketing email
The distinction is the trigger. Marketing email is broadcast on your schedule to many recipients; transactional email is sent to one person because theydid something. Because users wait on these messages — often blocked mid-signup until a code arrives — they’re the emails most worth testing automatically. You can route them to a disposable inbox and assert the contents in CI; see testing signup verification emails and email testing in CI/CD.
